For the grown-up

French vowels: a, e, i · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 25

2. 12

3. Look for: Names three o'clock, written as three o'clock or 3 o'clock.

B

1. [a]

2. [e]

C

1. [i]

2. [e] If your child circles [i], they are hearing the English 'ee' in été. Say été with a short, crisp [e] and ask again.

3. [e] If your child circles [a], they are opening the mouth too wide. Keep the lips a little more closed and say the word again.

4. [i] If your child circles [e], they are saying the 'y' as a short e. Stretch the lips wide, as for a smile, and try [i] again.

D

1. Look for: Names a French word and says its vowel sound is different from English, for example banane with a wide open [a]. If your child says the vowels are the same, say 'banane' aloud and ask them to open the mouth very wide for the [a].

E

1. [a]: chat, ananas · [e]: vélo, été · [i]: lit, stylo If your child puts 'stylo' under [e], the 'y' is being read as a short e. Stretch the lips wide, as for a smile, and say 'stylo' again.

Words to use

Say“StudyDen says each French word aloud, so you do not need to. Listen together and copy each mouth shape: wide for [a], a little closed for [e], a smile for [i].”
Instead of“Say the French words in an English accent, tell them the answer is right, and move on.”

After the sheet

Say the English 'cat', then the French 'chat', and ask which vowel sounded different. Then try 'baby' and 'bébé'.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
