Un or une? · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. quatre If they circle cinq (5), they may be counting one more dot than there is. Count the dots together, then say quatre (4).

2. rouge

3. trois If they circle quatre (4), they have counted one dot too many. Point to each dot and say the numbers out loud, then circle trois (3).

B

1. un If they circle une, they may think a book is a girl's thing. Remind them that livre is masculine, so it takes un.

C

1. un If they circle une, they may be guessing from how the word sounds. Say: stylo is masculine, so it takes un.

2. une If they circle un, ask them which group bouteille belongs to. Bouteille is feminine, so it takes une.

3. une If they circle un, they may be thinking of the colour word. Orange the fruit is feminine here, so it takes une.

4. un If they circle une, they may think a toy is a girl's thing. Gender here is grammar. Jouet is masculine, so un.

D

1. un Bea has mixed up grammar with real life. Gender is a grammar label, not whether a thing is a boy or a girl. Sac is masculine, so un sac.

E

1. Look for: Three objects, each with un or une in front, with a question mark on any that is a guess.

Words to use

Say“Say the article with the noun every time, like un stylo. StudyDen plays the French words aloud in the app, so listen to them first.”
Instead of“Translate the English word only, or tell them the article is just a rule to memorise.”

After the sheet

Gather a pen, a bottle and an orange. Say each one with un or une, then check your answers against this sheet together.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
