For the grown-up

Who and how questions · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. quatre

2. vert

3. neuf

B

1. Look for: Elle est comment, with comment as the last word, after Elle est.

C

1. comment If they circle qui, they have picked the who word. Comment means how, and this asks what it is like. Say both words aloud and point to the English.

2. qui If they circle comment, they have picked the how word. Who is it needs qui at the end. Ask: is the English asking who, or how?

3. Look for: Il s'appelle comment, with comment as the last word.

4. Look for: Ils sont qui, with qui as the last word. If they write comment, check the English. Who are they asks who, so the word is qui. Ask them to say the question aloud with qui at the end.

D

1. qui If they circle comment, they have repeated Kit's mistake. Comment means how. Who is it asks who, so the word is qui. Ask the child to read Kit's line aloud, then the right line.

E

1. Look for: Two questions about one new person, one ending in qui and one ending in comment.

Words to use

Say“Listen to the app first, since StudyDen plays the French words aloud. Then ask: which word goes at the end, and does it mean who or how?”
Instead of“Translate every answer for them, or tell them the answer before they have tried.”

After the sheet

At teatime, point to a photo on the fridge and ask 'C'est qui ?' in French. Answer with a name, then swap roles.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
