What should my Year 2 child know?
Year 2 is where fluency arrives. Reading becomes comfortable enough to read for meaning rather than effort, and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables become automatic. It is the end of Key Stage 1.
First, the bit that takes the pressure off
If you home educate in England, the National Curriculum does not legally apply to you. You are required to provide an education suitable to your child's age, ability and aptitude — not to teach a particular list in a particular order. Your child does not have to be "on track" with anything below.
The list is here because it is genuinely useful to know what most children this age are doing, not because you owe anyone a match.
The step up from Year 1
Writing is the real step up: a Year 2 child is expected to write several linked sentences with some punctuation, not just one.
Milestones you can actually check
Not exhaustive, and not a test. A child ahead in one area and behind in another is the normal case, not a warning sign.
English
- Read accurately and at a comfortable pace
- Use capital letters, full stops, question and exclamation marks
- Write for different purposes (story, letter, instructions)
- Spell common homophones
Maths
- Place value to 100
- 2, 5 and 10 times tables
- Add and subtract two-digit numbers
- Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes
- Tell the time to five minutes
Science
- What living things need to survive
- How animals and humans grow
- Uses of everyday materials
- Record findings in a simple table

Most UK children in Year 2 cover these 12 subjects. You do not have to teach all of them, and plenty of home-educating families deliberately do not.
