Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. N your child may have picked a letter that is not at the top. Point to the top box and say north is at the top.

2. north your child may have read the map from the bottom up the wrong way. Up the page is north. Ask which way the top of the map points.

3. right your child may have picked up or down. Ask: is the star in the same row as the robot?

B

1. land your child may have chosen ocean because the globe looks mostly blue. Ask: what colour is the patch? Green shows land.

C

1. ocean your child may have said land because the blue area is big. Ask: what does blue show? Blue shows water.

2. land

3. Shows land: green patch, brown patch · Shows water: blue patch, big blue sea

4. the blue area your child may have picked the green area. Ask: what does blue show? Ships sail on water.

D

1. Look for: Says Kit is wrong and gives a reason such as oceans cover almost three quarters of Earth, so more blue than green. your child may think the land looks big on a flat map. Ask: what colour covers most of the globe?

E

1. Look for: Explains that most of Earth is ocean and blue shows water, so most of the ball is blue.

Words to use

Say“Which colour covers most of Earth? How do you know?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer is blue and green is land.”

After the sheet

Look at a ball at home. Colour it with a felt pen: blue for ocean, green for land, with much more blue than green. Explain your choice.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
