Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. N If your child circles E, point to the empty box at the top of the compass. Say north always goes at the top.

2. Look for: The word summer. If your child writes spring, say the seasons go round in a ring, so look at the season next to spring.

3. S

B

1. north If your child circles south, point to the house. Slide your finger up to the shop. Up is north.

C

1. bungalow If your child circles flat, say a flat is part of a bigger building. A bungalow is a whole house with no upstairs.

2. detached If your child circles terraced, ask whether that home has a neighbour on both sides.

3. terraced If your child circles semi-detached, count the sides that touch another house. Two sides means terraced.

4. caravan

D

1. Look for: An aerial photo is taken from high above, looking down, so it shows the tops of roofs. If your child only says it is a photo, ask: which part of a house can you see from above? The roof.

E

1. Look for: Terraced roofs join in one long row. The detached roof stands alone with space round it.

Words to use

Say“Which home is that, and how do you know? Tell me one clue.”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer.”

After the sheet

Put a cup and two books on the table. Ask your child to say where each one is, using next to and left.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
