Yes or no questions · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. ↓ ↓ → → your child chose a route that goes into the rock. Start by moving down, because the rock is to the right.

2. 1 Get two slices of bread · 2 Put the bread in the toaster · 3 Press the lever down · 4 Eat the toast your child started with the toast. The bread must go in the toaster before it can be toasted, so start with getting the bread.

3. an algorithm

B

1. yellow

C

1. NO: cup, spoon · YES: pencil, ruler your child put the cup in YES. A cup made of plastic is not wood, so it goes in NO. Ask the question about each object.

2. NO: pencil, ruler, cup · YES: spoon

3. What colour is it? your child chose a yes or no question. Ask whether the answer could be more than yes or no.

4. wooden and brown your child picked a question. An attribute is a describing word or phrase, not a question about the object.

D

1. Look for: A yes or no question the spoon fits, such as Is it used for eating? or Is it made of metal? your child thinks each object can only be in one group. Ask for a different question that puts the spoon in YES.

E

1. Look for: A yes or no question about one attribute, with some objects in a YES group and some in a NO group.

Words to use

Say“Which question did you ask? Which objects went in the YES group, and which in the NO group?”
Instead of“Tell them there is only one right way to group the objects.”

After the sheet

Gather five objects from a kitchen drawer. Ask one yes or no question, sort them into YES and NO piles, then ask a different question and sort them again.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

5 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Making groups(with a plan)
  2. Build a question tree(with a plan)
  3. Building a fair branching tree(with a plan)
  4. Planning a branching database(with a plan)
  5. Dinosaur identifier tree(with a plan)

Every Year 3 computing worksheet

The worksheets plan opens a printable sheet for every lesson in Years 1 to 6, each with its answers on a separate page for you. It costs £6.99 a month or £59 a year for the whole family, with no free trial.

The full StudyDen plan adds the lessons themselves, marked as your child works, with the worksheets included. It is 7 days free, then £29.99 a month.
