Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. rouge → red; bleu → blue; vert → green If a colour is joined to the wrong word, point to the swatch and say its French word aloud. Then match again.

2. sept If they circled a different number word, count the dots again one at a time. Say each number in French as you touch it.

3. jaune If they circled rouge, they know a colour word but not this one. Look at the swatch again and say the colour in English first.

B

1. le Sud If they circled le sud, the words are right but the S is small. Point to the empty box at the bottom of the compass and ask which letter starts Sud.

C

1. je vais If they circled il va, they picked the form for he. Ask who is going: I, so je vais.

2. il va If they circled je vais, they used I. Check who is going first: he, so il va.

3. l'Est If they circled l'est, the letter is small. After dans, Est names a region, so it starts with a capital E. Before a vowel it is l'Est.

4. Look for: Elle va dans l'Ouest, with l' before Ouest and a capital O on Ouest. If the direction starts with a small letter, rewrite it with a capital O, as in Ouest. If they used je vais, check who is going: she.

D

1. Look for: Elle va dans le Sud, with a capital S on Sud. Kit has the verb right, but the direction is written small. Point to the S and ask which letter should be big.

E

1. Look for: A sentence with il va and a capital-letter compass point, plus a reason.

Words to use

Say“StudyDen plays the French words aloud, so listen together. Check the capital letter on every compass point.”
Instead of“Say the French words yourself and move on without checking the capitals.”

After the sheet

At the table, sketch a compass with a pencil. Point north and say 'je vais dans le Nord'. Then swap: you name a direction and they say the sentence with je vais or il va.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
