Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 460

2. 56

3. <

B

1. 3744 If your child splits 12 into 1 and 2, the total is 936. Split by place value instead: 10 and 2, so 312 × 10 and 312 × 2.

C

1. 2915

2. 3180

3. 3445

4. 5565 If your child writes 5300, they have worked out only 265 × 20 and forgotten 265 × 1. Add 265 to 5300 to recombine and get 5565.

D

1. 4914 If your child writes 4680, they made Ben's mistake and left out 234 × 1. Add 234 to 4,680 to get 4,914.

E

1. 10, 11 and 12 If your child includes 13, split 13 into 10 and 3: 3120 + 936 = 4056. That is over 4000, so 13 is out.

Words to use

Say“Split the smaller number into tens and ones first, then add the two partial products.”
Instead of“Use the calculator, or tell them to just multiply the big numbers in one go.”

After the sheet

Put 13 cups in two groups, 10 and 3, with 4 dried pasta pieces in each cup. Count the pasta in each group, then add the two totals: 40 + 12 = 52.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
