Move it to make a round number

Name: ____________ · Date: ____________
Year 6 · Maths · about 20 minutes
Answers are on the grown-up page

Today I can add by moving some of one number to the other to make a round number, keeping the total the same.

A Look back3 min

  1. 1.

    3000 + 500 =

    3000500
  2. 2.

    70 + 80 =

    7080
  3. 3.

    4,520 4,502

    45204502

B Watch me, then you4 min

Ola has 29 stickers. Her friend gives her 45 more. How many stickers does Ola have now?

Watch me
20304050607080

29 is only 1 away from 30.

Move 1 from the 45 to the 29: 29 + 1 = 30 and 45 − 1 = 44.

Now add 30 + 44 = 74. Ola has 74 stickers, the same total as 29 + 45.

Now you
  1. 1.

    Work out 38 + 49.

    3849

C Your turn6 min

  1. 1.

    997 + 425 =

    997425
  2. 2.

    997 + 638 =

    997638
  3. 3.

    997 + 852 =

    997852
  4. 4.

    997 + 486 =

    997486

Say it out loud: What stayed the same in every row, and what changed? Why does moving 3 from 425 still give the same total?

D Spot the mistake3 min

Ali says: “97 + 53 = 153, because 97 + 3 = 100 and 100 + 53 = 153.”

    What is 97 + 53?

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 3500

2. 150

3. >

B

1. 87 If your child gets 89, they added 2 to 38 but left 49 as it was. Move the 2 out of the 49 as well, so the total stays the same.

C

1. 1422 If your child gets 1425, they added the 3 to 997 but did not take it from 425. Move the 3 out of the 425 too.

2. 1635

3. 1849

4. 1483

D

1. 150 If your child writes 153, they copied Ali's mistake. Ali added 3 to 97 but left 53 unchanged, so the 3 was counted twice. Take the 3 out of the 53: 100 + 50 = 150.

E

1. Look for: 998 + 247, because 998 is only 2 away from 1000. Neither 463 nor 358 is close to a round hundred. Also praise a child who spots that 358 is 2 from 360.

Words to use

Say“Is either number close to a round one? Move only as much as you need, then add.”
Instead of“Use column addition every time, even when you can see a quicker way.”

After the sheet

Put out 47 buttons in one pile and 38 in another. Move 2 buttons across, then count each pile and add them. Did the total change?

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
