Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 5300

2. 6500 If your child writes 6400, they rounded down. The tens and ones make 82, which is more than 50, so round up to 6500.

3. < Ask your child to compare the digits from the left. The thousands and hundreds match, so look at the tens: 0 is less than 5.

B

1. 20,000 If your child writes 2, they have used the digit alone. The 2 is in the ten-thousands column, so it is 2 ten-thousands.

C

1. 800,000

2. 80,000 If your child writes 800000, the 8 has stayed in the hundred-thousands column. Move it one column to the right, into the ten-thousands.

3. 8,000 If your child writes 80000, they have put the 8 in the ten-thousands. There is a 0 in the ten-thousands, so the 8 is in the thousands.

4. 800 If your child writes 8, the zeros have been forgotten. The zeros hold the columns in place, so the 8 is in the hundreds column: 8 hundreds.

D

1. 70,000 If your child writes 7, they have read the digit alone. Count the columns: the 7 is in the ten-thousands, so it is 7 ten-thousands.

E

1. Look for: A seven-digit number with 7 in the hundred-thousands column and 2 in the ones column, with a reason. Ask your child to point to the column of the 7 first. Then fill the other columns with digits, using 0 where no units are needed.

Words to use

Say“Which column is that digit in? What is that column worth?”
Instead of“The 9 is a 9, so it is worth 9.”

After the sheet

Write a seven-digit number on a card using 0 for empty columns. Cover one digit and ask what it is worth.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
