5 signs school is not working for your child
Updated · 1 min read
None of these signs mean you should pull your child out tomorrow. They mean the situation deserves a proper look rather than another term of hoping it settles.
Not the newsletter version — the signs parents actually compare at the school gate.
5 signs school isn't working for your child — the ones parents tell each other, not the ones in the newsletter. Noticing them isn't drastic. Ignoring them can be.
Sign #1
Sunday night dread
The mood shifts after Sunday lunch, every week. Kids don't fake a pattern that reliable.
Sunday dread has a shape. It tends to start after lunch, it gets quieter rather than louder, and it vanishes on the Monday that turns out to be an inset day. Children rarely keep a pattern that reliable going on purpose.
Sign #2
Homework battles longer than the homework
Forty-five minutes of tears for a ten-minute worksheet isn't a discipline problem. It's a signal.
Sign #3
They've stopped telling you things
'How was school?' — 'fine.' Every day. The shrug is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Sign #4
'They're fine in class' but your gut disagrees
Teachers see thirty kids at once. You see one kid up close. Trust the close-up.
Sign #5
Weekends bring back a different child
If the Friday-to-Sunday version is the real them, it's worth asking what Monday-to-Friday is costing.
If you recognise three or more
Write down what you actually see for a fortnight: the times, the moods, the words they use. It takes two minutes a day and it turns a feeling into something you can act on.
That record is useful whichever way you go. It gives a meeting with school something concrete to work from, and if you do decide to leave it is the honest answer to the 'but why now?' you will be asked by relatives for the next year.
