Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. red

2. blue

3. orange

B

1. lighter If they circle darker, they may be remembering that blue makes a green deeper. Yellow makes it brighter. Ask: is yellow a pale paint or a deep paint?

2. green If your child circles orange or purple, they may be mixing up the pairs. Yellow and blue make green. Ask your child to mix a drop of each on a plate.

C

1. green If they circle orange, they may be thinking of red and yellow. Point to the two colour chips and ask which two were mixed.

2. orange If they circle orange, they may think lots of yellow changes the colour. Yellow and blue always make green. More yellow makes a lighter green.

3. darker If they circle lighter, they may think any new paint makes it paler. Ask: was the new paint blue or yellow?

4. Darker green: forest, deep moss · Lighter green: pale lime, mint If a card is in the wrong column, ask which paint makes green lighter. More yellow makes it lighter. More blue makes it darker.

D

1. purple your child may be mixing up the two colours that make green. Red and blue make purple. Ask your child to mix a drop of each on a plate.

E

1. Look for: Names two different greens and says the lighter one has more yellow, or the darker one has more blue.

Words to use

Say“Which two colours did you mix? What happened when you added more blue?”
Instead of“Green is made from yellow and blue, so just remember that.”

After the sheet

Dab yellow and blue paint or crayon on paper. Add more blue, then more yellow, and line up the greens from darkest to lightest.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
