For the grown-up

What breaks the fast? · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Maghrib

2. Look for: says Ibrahim (AS) is thrown into the fire

3. 622

B

1. Yes, it breaks

C

1. No, it does not break your child may think anything swallowed breaks the fast. Spit is not food or drink, so the fast is still valid.

2. No, it does not break your child may say yes because food went in. Ask: did Ben know he was fasting? Forgetting means the fast is still valid.

3. No, it does not break your child may think anything on the body breaks the fast. Cream on the skin does not. Nothing is eaten or drunk.

4. Yes, it breaks your child may think being sick never breaks the fast. Being sick by accident does not, but making yourself sick on purpose does.

D

1. Look for: says Kit is wrong because Ali swallowed no water, so the fast is still valid If they say Kit is right, ask: did any water go down Ali's throat? Rinsing and spitting out does not break the fast.

E

1. Look for: gives two reasons, such as Allah wanting ease or mercy, or protecting a sick person or traveller from harm

Words to use

Say“Ask two questions: is it eating or drinking, and did the person do it on purpose?”
Instead of“Anything that goes near the mouth breaks the fast, so stop the child from brushing teeth.”

After the sheet

At dinner, ask your child to give one example of something that breaks the fast and one that does not, then say why.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
