Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Look for: A body signal such as a racing heart, fast breathing or a tight tummy.

2. Look for: Breathing, grounding or reframing, named as a calm-down tool.

3. Look for: A name, address, school, birthday or photo of yourself.

B

1. paid or gifted post If your child picks organic, ask: did the person get something free for the post? The #gifted label says yes.

C

1. organic post If your child picks #ad, ask: did anyone pay her or give her something? The clue says no.

2. #ad post If your child picks organic, ask: was the footballer paid? A paid post is an advert and must say #ad.

3. algorithmic post If your child picks organic, ask: did you choose to follow this account? The app chose to show it.

4. paid or gifted post If your child picks organic, ask: did the video maker get something free? UK rules say a free gift must be labelled.

D

1. Look for: A sensible reason: someone was paid or given a gift but the label is missing. If your child says nothing could be an advert, ask: could a shop pay someone and forget the label? Rules say they must label it.

E

1. Look for: A question such as Who gains from this post, or Am I choosing this, or is the app choosing for me?

Words to use

Say“What label did you see on that post? Who gains if people tap like on it?”
Instead of“Don't believe anything you see online. Adverts are bad.”

After the sheet

Choose three posts on your own phone first, then look at them together. Sort them into organic, #ad or algorithmic. Remind your child they will never be in trouble for telling you what they see. NSPCC helpline for grown-ups: 0808 800 5000. Childline for children: 0800 1111.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
