For the grown-up

Mon, ma, ton and ta · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. rouge If your child circles bleu, the colour names have been mixed up. Point to the red swatch and say rouge.

2. sept If your child circles neuf, they have probably miscounted. Touch each counter as you count aloud: un, deux, trois, and so on to sept.

3. trois If your child circles deux, they have counted one short. Touch each counter as you say un, deux, trois.

B

1. ton If your child circles ta, they have used the feminine word. Chien is masculine, so ton. Ask: is chien masculine or feminine?

2. mon If your child circles ma, they have matched the word to the wrong noun. Frère is masculine, so mon frère.

C

1. mon If your child circles ma, check the noun again. Sac is masculine, so mon sac.

2. ma If your child circles mon, they have treated sœur as masculine. Sœur is feminine, so ma sœur.

3. ton If your child circles ta, chien is masculine, so the word is ton. Ask: masculine or feminine?

4. ta If your child circles ton, they have looked at the verb, not the noun. Maison is feminine, so ta maison.

D

1. mon chat If your child circles ma chat, they have used the feminine word. Chat is masculine, so mon chat. Ask: masculine or feminine?

E

1. Look for: Says ai and è sound the same, and writes another word with ai from the page, such as aime or aimes.

Words to use

Say“Check the noun first, then pick mon or ma, or ton or ta. Answers are on each item, and StudyDen plays the French words aloud in the app.”
Instead of“Say 'just learn the list' and skip asking whether the noun is masculine or feminine.”

After the sheet

Point to five objects at home. Ask your child to name each one in French and say whether it is masculine or feminine before choosing mon or ma.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
