A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas a journey or activity puts into the air. For each person, a plane makes a much bigger one than a train. Read Kit's claim, then check it.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. N your child has probably picked the letter that sits at the side of the compass. Point to the top of the page and say which letter is always there on a map.

2. A1 If your child circles A2, the church has been counted one row too high. The church is on the bottom row, so its number is 1. Say the letter along the bottom first, then go up the side.

3. B3

B

1. south-east

C

1. S If your child circles N, the compass has been read upside down. Ask them to point north at the top of the page first.

2. north-west If your child circles south-east, they have used the way there, not the way back. Going home is the opposite way, north-west.

3. C3 If your child circles C2, they have counted the rows down from the top. Count up from the bottom row to find the number.

4. E4 If your child circles E3, the shop has been counted one row too low. Check that the shop sits on the top row of the map.

D

1. Look for: Says Kit is wrong and explains that a carbon footprint is greenhouse gas produced by a journey or activity, not a mark on the ground. If your child only says no, ask what goes into the air when a car burns petrol or a plane flies. That is the carbon footprint.

E

1. Look for: Says south-east, names a way to travel such as train or coach, and gives a reason linked to a smaller carbon footprint or less pollution.

Words to use

Say“Which way is it, and how do you know?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer straight away.”

After the sheet

Use a compass or a phone compass app to find which way your back door faces. Then look at a map of Europe together and trace a train route from London to Milan.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
