Regions and counties · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. South

2. B3

3. a wood or group of trees

B

1. south-west If your child circles north-east, they copied the word from the question. Stand at the church on the compass and ask which way you walk to reach the shop.

C

1. Wales

2. Northern Ireland

3. Wales

4. A country of the UK: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales · A region of England: East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, London If London or Yorkshire is in the country column, the child may think every name on the list is a country. Ask: is this a whole country, or a part of England?

D

1. Look for: Belfast is in Northern Ireland, which is not part of Great Britain, so the claim is false. If the child says Ali is right, they think Great Britain and the UK are the same. Ask them to name the three countries of Great Britain and say where Northern Ireland fits.

E

1. Look for: Names a county or area and the UK country it is in, with a reason such as an address, a map or a sign.

Words to use

Say“Which country are we in, and which region or county are we in? How do you know?”
Instead of“Tell them the UK is just England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so there is nothing more to learn.”

After the sheet

Look at a letter or bill at home and find your town and county. Then ask, which country is that county in?

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
