The bank bought a real van, so it owned something and took a risk.

Both sides agreed £860 before the sale, and the price never grows.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Lawwamah They picked the stage that is calm and at peace. That is the last stage. Ask your child: which stage is the self that blames itself?

2. 1453 If your child wrote 1400, that is where the timeline starts. Point to the dot just after 1450 and ask which year the city was taken.

3. Writing Knowledge comes first, then Writing. Ask your child to read the chain from left to right, one box at a time.

B

1. Look for: Says fair profit, because a real item was bought and sold at a price both agreed. If your child says riba, ask: was something real bought and sold? The shop owned the bike, so the extra £30 is fair profit.

2. Look for: Says riba, because the extra is charged on a loan only for time. If your child says fair profit, ask: was anything bought or sold? Only money was lent, so the extra £45 is riba.

C

1. Look for: Says fair profit, because a real item was bought and sold at a price both agreed.

2. Look for: Says riba, because the extra is charged on a loan only for time.

3. Look for: Says riba, because the extra £20 grows with time and is not part of the agreed price. If your child says fair profit, ask: what is the extra £20 for? It is charged for waiting, so it is riba.

4. Look for: Says fair profit, because the bank sold a real item at a fixed price agreed at the start.

D

1. Look for: Says Yusuf is wrong: any extra charged on a loan just for waiting is riba, however small. If your child agrees with Yusuf, ask: what is the extra £10 for? It is charged only for waiting, so it is riba even when it is small.

E

1. Look for: Mentions risk or effort in the sale, and that riba takes profit from someone's need without shared risk.

Words to use

Say“Was a real thing bought and sold, or was money lent for time? How do you know?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer, or say that money work is too hard for this subject.”

After the sheet

Play shop with a few coins. Sell a toy at a price you agree first, then lend some coins and ask for extra back. Talk about which deal is fair profit and which is riba.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
