Taking turns with a partner · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Bend your knees If your child picks Lie down, they may not be thinking about being ready to move. Ask them to show the ready stance.

2. Hold still and balance If your child picks Hop away, they are moving when the step asks them to stay steady. Try the balance together and count slowly.

3. Put your hands out

B

1. catches it and holds it If your child picks runs off with it, they are rushing ahead of their partner. Say: a good partner waits until the ball is in their hands.

C

1. 1 Wait and watch your partner · 2 Your partner rolls the ball to you · 3 Catch it and hold it for three seconds · 4 Count three out loud together · 5 Send the ball back gently If your child sends the ball back before counting, they have skipped the hold. Say: count three first, then send it back.

2. Waiting → Keep still until it is your go; Watching → Look at what your partner does; Respecting → Cheer your partner on; Taking turns → Hand the ball over after your go If your child joins Respecting to Keep still, they may be mixing up waiting and respecting. Ask: what does your partner need from you?

3. Wait until Sam has caught and held it If your child picks Throw it harder, they think speed is the fix. Ask: has Sam had his go yet?

4. Look for: A tally mark for each try where both waited. One way to wait, such as watching.

D

1. Look for: Says Lou should wait, because each partner has a turn before anyone goes again. If your child agrees with Lou, ask: when does your partner get a go?

E

1. Look for: Two sensible rules for a partner game, one about taking turns and one about waiting for a partner's go.

Words to use

Say“Which part was hardest to wait for, and what helped you watch your partner?”
Instead of“Well done, you were perfect at waiting.”
