Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 7

2. 3

3. 8 If your child writes 24, they added. Ask how many more marks the summer row has.

B

1. Metal If your child circles Wood, ask them to hold a key and say whether it feels hard and cold. Keys are metal.

C

1. a plastic toy duck → Plastic; a metal key → Metal; a window → Glass; a wooden chair → Wood If your child joins the duck to Wood, ask them to squeeze the duck. Plastic bends and is light, so it is not wood.

2. Plastic If your child circles Wood, ask them to count the tally marks in each row again. Plastic has the longest row.

3. Wood If your child circles Glass, ask them which row is shortest. Fewest means the row with the fewest marks.

4. Wood: a wooden ruler, a wooden block · Metal: a metal spoon · Plastic: a plastic beaker If your child puts the ruler under Plastic, ask what the ruler is made from, then point to the word that matches.

D

1. Look for: says the chair is an object and wood is the material it is made from, so Mia is wrong If your child agrees with Mia, ask which word names the thing you can touch and which word names what it is made from.

E

1. Look for: names metal and wood, and says the blade is metal and the handle is wood

Words to use

Say“Which thing is it, and what is it made from? How do you know?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer straight away.”

After the sheet

Go on a materials hunt round one room. Sort what you find into piles of wood, plastic, metal and glass.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
