Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 2 If your child says 4, they have counted the birds. Ask them to put a finger on the snail row.

2. flower If your child picks leaf or root, ask which stage grows on the adult plant before the seed forms.

3. cat If your child picks dog or fish, ask them to find the tallest bar first and read its label.

B

1. Look for: The hair row, because a dog has hair, so it is a mammal. If your child writes no hair, ask: what covers a dog's body?

C

1. yes

2. no If your child says yes, they may think wings make a mammal. Ask what covers the body of a robin.

3. yes

4. yes If your child says no, they are judging by flying. Ask them what covers a bat's body, then check the hair feature again.

D

1. no Ben has noticed where the fish lives, not what covers its body. Ask your child if a fish has hair. Mammals have hair, fish have gills and fins.

E

1. Look for: Picks the chimpanzee or the zebra and says it has hair, like people.

Words to use

Say“What is one feature of this animal? Does that feature tell us it is a mammal?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer is mammal and move on.”

After the sheet

Look through a picture book together. For each animal, ask: has it got hair, feathers, scales or gills? Sort the pictures into two piles: mammals and not mammals.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
