Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. red, yellow, blue If they circle green, remind them that red, yellow and blue cannot be made by mixing other colours. Point to the three.

2. mid grey

3. green

B

1. tree If they circle farm, school or shop, point to the first line of Watch me. Ask what Ola drew for the park.

2. Look for: A small drawn symbol and a name for a place the child loves, such as a park, a beach or a garden. If they draw a shape with no name, ask which place it stands for. Then ask them to write that place beside it.

C

1. house If your child circles tree or pond, point to the symbol. Ask what Ola lives in.

2. made up If your child circles real, ask: have you ever seen a dragon? Maps can show made-up places too.

3. how she feels about the park If your child circles the way to the shops, ask how a smiley sun makes them feel.

4. Yes

D

1. Look for: Says a map can show made-up places, feelings or memories, so the claim is false. If they only say that Kit is wrong, ask what else a map can show. Let them use an example, like a feeling about a park.

E

1. Look for: A symbol that shows a feeling about a named place, with a reason.

Words to use

Say“What does this symbol stand for? Could a map show a feeling as well as a place?”
Instead of“Your map needs to look like a real map, so draw the roads.”

After the sheet

Draw a map of your room or garden with three special spots. Use one small symbol for each, then join them with a dotted line.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
