Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. No If they say yes, they may think any bright colour is primary. Remind them that red, yellow and blue are the three primary colours.

2. No If they say yes, they may be guessing from the shape’s name. Ask them to count the corners with a finger.

3. blue and yellow Red and yellow make orange. Red and blue make purple. Blue and yellow make green.

B

1. No If they say yes, they may be thinking of the whole head. Remind them a triangle has points, so it is not round.

C

1. spiky If they say smooth, ask them what the spines would feel like if they touched one. Are they sharp?

2. No If they say yes, they may be thinking of the pointy nose. Ask them to run a finger round the outline.

3. soft and furry If they say spiky, they may think the whole animal is spiky. Ask: are the ears prickly, or soft?

4. circle If they choose square, they may be picking the shape they can see. Ask them to trace the round outline of the body.

D

1. No, the ears are soft and furry If they choose yes, they are looking at the back only. Ask them what the ears feel like.

E

1. Look for: Names at least two textures and one shape for a nocturnal animal, such as soft feathers, smooth or spiky parts, and a round head.

Words to use

Say“Which bit feels spiky, and which bit feels soft?”
Instead of“Say “Well done, that’s right” and move straight on without asking what they noticed.”
