Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. N If they chose S, they may have mixed up north and south. Turn the picture so the top points north.

2. top If they said bottom, they may be reading from the wrong edge. Start with the letters along the bottom and the numbers up the side.

3. W If they chose E, they have swapped east and west. Face north and point your right arm towards east.

B

1. north

C

1. Europe

2. Africa If they picked Europe, ask where Ola's cousin lives. Tanzania is a country in Africa.

3. Eastern Africa If they chose Western Africa, they may have mixed up west and east. Face north and point your right arm east.

4. Country: Tanzania, United Kingdom · Continent: Africa, Europe If Africa went in the country column, ask whether Africa holds many countries inside it. Then check again.

D

1. Look for: Africa is a continent with many countries and different climates, not one country. If they only say Sam is wrong, ask them to name two different places in Africa, one hot and dry and one green.

E

1. Look for: A sentence saying Ola flies south, or south and a little east, to reach Tanzania.

Words to use

Say“Show me where the UK is on a globe. Now show me where Africa is. Is Africa one country or many?”
Instead of“Africa is just one country, isn't it?”

After the sheet

Find Africa on a world map or globe at home. Trace a route from the UK with your finger and say the compass direction as you go.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
