Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. N

2. C3

3. north

B

1. south

C

1. Cardiff

2. Edinburgh

3. Wales → Cardiff; Scotland → Edinburgh; Northern Ireland → Belfast; England → London

4. Northern Ireland

D

1. Look for: Names Cardiff as Wales's capital and says each UK country has a capital, so London is not alone. If your child says London is the only capital, ask them to name the four countries of the UK. Then ask which city is the capital of each one.

E

1. Look for: A zoomed-out map covers a large area with less detail, so streets do not fit. Zoomed-in maps show more detail.

Words to use

Say“Where is Cardiff, and which country is it the capital of?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer straight away, before they have had a go.”

After the sheet

Draw a simple map of your home with a compass in one corner. Ask which room is north of the kitchen. Then ask which way the front door is from the kitchen.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

5 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:
