Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. green If they choose orange, they may be thinking of red and yellow. Mixing yellow and blue makes green.

2. 5 If they pick the lightest step, ask them to find the darkest end of the ladder and count from there.

3. Look for: A clear light half and dark half, shaded with the pencil. If both halves look the same, ask them to press hard on one half and lightly on the other.

B

1. friendly If they say scary, ask which feature is big and round. Big round eyes usually make a face look kind.

2. scary If they say friendly, ask them to point to the sharp claws and say what sharp things make people feel.

C

1. friendly

2. scary If they say friendly, point to the narrow red eyes and sharp teeth and ask how those features make them feel.

3. Usually looks scary: sharp teeth, narrow red eyes · Usually looks friendly: big round eyes, wide smile

4. Look for: One named feature changed to something friendly, such as a smile, round eyes or softer colours.

D

1. Look for: Says some monsters are friendly, funny or misunderstood, or that features like smiles and round eyes make a monster look kind. If they agree with Kit, ask them to name a friendly monster from a book or story they know, then ask which features it has.

Words to use

Say“Which features make this monster look friendly, and which make it look scary? What would you change to flip it?”
Instead of“Monsters are always scary, aren't they?”
