Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. orange If your child picks purple, they may be mixing red and blue. Point to the red and yellow swatches and ask which two colours they would stir together.

2. rectangle If your child picks square, ask whether all four sides are the same length. Then ask what the long sides look like.

3. yellow If your child picks green or purple, explain that these are mixed from primary colours. Ask which colour cannot be made by mixing others.

B

1. sphere If your child picks cube, ask whether a cube has flat faces or round ones. Hold up a ball and ask what shape it is.

2. factory If your child picks bakery, ask what gets built on the line. Cars are built in factories, so robot arms work there too.

C

1. boxy: a square box body · round: a ball-shaped head, a round wheel · long and thin: a thin bendy arm If your child puts a part in the wrong column, ask them to picture the part's outline and say whether it is round, boxy or long and thin.

2. green If your child picks purple or orange, ask what colour grass is. Then point to the swatch that matches it.

3. a round head → shape; bright red paint → colour; rows of bolts → pattern If your child joins the head to colour, ask whether the round head is about how it looks in outline or what colour it is.

4. Look for: a word or phrase naming the shape, colour, pattern or job of the silver robot

D

1. Look for: says No and gives a real place where robots work, such as a hospital, factory or home If your child agrees with Kit, they may think robots only exist in stories. Ask them to name one robot they have seen working in a real place.

E

1. Look for: two real places other than a home, factory or hospital, with a reason a robot would be useful in each

Words to use

Say“Where have you seen a robot working? What shape was it, and what colour?”
Instead of“Robots are only in films, so you do not need to know about them.”

After the sheet

Look up a robot hoover or a car factory robot with your child. Sketch its outline on scrap paper and pick one or two words to write on a mood board made from old magazine pages.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
