Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 100

2. 2.5 in every hundred

3. Uthman

B

1. 75 If your child wrote 750 they took a quarter of £3000. Zakat is £2.50 for every £100, so ask how many hundreds fit into 3000.

C

1. A family who cannot buy enough food If your child chose another card, ask: who is zakat for, and who here is really in need?

2. Everyone gives the same share of what they have If your child chose another card, look at the chart: more savings means more zakat, but always £2.50 in every £100.

3. Giving it to people in need If your child chose another card, ask: who does zakat help, and why is that fair?

4. No, not yet If your child chose Yes, they forgot the whole year. Zakat waits until the money has been kept for a full Islamic year.

D

1. 10 If your child wrote 40, they found 10% of £400 (400 ÷ 10) instead of 2.5%. Ask how many hundreds fit into 400, then take £2.50 from each one.

E

1. Look for: Two sensible reasons linking zakat to fairness, such as sharing wealth with those in need or obeying Allah.

Words to use

Say“How many hundreds are there, and what is £2.50 for each one? Which words tell you the money has been kept for a whole year?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer, or say zakat is always 10%.”

After the sheet

Use four coins or folded paper notes to stand for £400. Work out 2.5% together, then talk about one way your family helps people who are in need.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
