Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Barzakh your child may have picked a place of reward. Barzakh is the waiting stage between death and the Gathering. Point to Death in the list and ask what comes next.

2. Look for: Says that deeds are weighed. If your child is unsure, remind them that Mizan means scales. Ask what scales are used for.

3. Look for: All people are brought together, or gathered, for judgement. If your child mixes Hashr up with the weighing, point to the chain. Hashr comes before Mizan, when everyone is gathered.

B

1. Look for: Writes Jannah. your child may have named Jahannam. Remind them that Jannah means garden, then ask which place has gardens and springs.

C

1. Jannah → a garden of reward; Jahannam → a place of punishment; Akhirah → the afterlife; Surah → a chapter of the Qur'an your child may have swapped Jannah and Jahannam. Say the Arabic word for garden and ask which place sounds like a garden.

2. Jannah: Flowing rivers, Shade and peace · Jahannam: Seven gates, A place of punishment your child put a reward picture under Jahannam. Ask whether the card is a reward or a punishment.

3. Believers who do good deeds, men and women your child may have chosen a group by status. Ask what the verse links Jannah to: good deeds with belief.

4. To make the reader stop and think your child may think the repeats are an accident. Explain that the question is repeated on purpose, so the reader pauses and thinks about Allah's gifts.

D

1. Look for: Says that Qur'an 40:40 links Jannah to belief and righteous deeds, not to never making mistakes. your child may agree with Sami. Ask what Qur'an 40:40 links Jannah to, and whether it says never making a mistake.

E

1. Look for: Names two Jannah images such as gardens, rivers, shade or fruit, and explains that familiar images help point to something beyond normal experience.

Words to use

Say“Which words in the Qur'an help you picture Jannah? What do you think the picture cannot show?”
Instead of“Just learn that Jahannam has seven gates and move on.”

After the sheet

At dinner, ask each person to name one thing they think Jannah might have, and why the Qur'an uses a garden picture. Talk about it together.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
