Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Abbasid Caliphate your child may be thinking of a later empire. Ask which caliphate ruled from Baghdad straight after the Umayyads.

2. 1 Barzakh · 2 Gathering (Hashr) · 3 Weighing of deeds (Mizan) If the Weighing comes first, ask your child what happens in Barzakh before everyone is gathered.

3. Look for: One correct pair: Al-Adl, The Just; Al-Fattah, The Opener; or Al-Latif, The Subtly Kind. If your child is stuck, say one meaning aloud, such as The Just, and ask which Name it belongs to.

B

1. the size of the Earth If your child circles the Sun or the Moon, explain that the horizon dips because the Earth is round. Al-Biruni used this to work out how big the Earth is.

2. Look for: Any sensible use of algebra today, such as finding an unknown number, building, science or computer programs. If your child is stuck, ask how they would find the missing number in □ + 4 = 10.

C

1. Al-Khwarizmi → Algebra book; Al-Biruni → Earth's circumference; Ibn Sina → Canon of Medicine If your child joined Al-Biruni to the algebra book, ask which scholar measured the Earth from a mountain.

2. Maths words: algebra, circumference, algorithm · Medicine words: fever, pulse If your child puts fever or pulse in maths, ask which words a doctor uses when someone is ill.

3. Baghdad

4. Look for: Names al-Khwarizmi, al-Biruni or Ibn Sina with a matching gift, such as algebra, measuring the Earth or the Canon of Medicine. If your child mixes up a scholar and his work, look back at the joining question together and read each pair aloud.

D

1. Look for: Either says al-Khwarizmi was Persian or from Khwarazm, not Makkah, or says one scholar's home cannot show where every scholar came from. If your child only says it is wrong, ask where al-Khwarizmi came from and where he worked.

E

1. Look for: A reasoned answer giving two reasons, such as a clear logical order, true facts, or ideas that others can test and check.

Words to use

Say“Which scholar is this about, and what did they give the world?”
Instead of“Read them the whole lesson again and wait for them to remember it.”

After the sheet

At dinner, ask your child to tell one family member one thing they learned about al-Khwarizmi, al-Biruni or Ibn Sina, then say which of the three they would most like to read about.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
