Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Relief If your child picks anger or tiredness, ask what the worry felt like just after avoiding it. The short-term feeling after avoiding is relief, which is why the worry keeps coming back.

2. 1 Stop and pause · 2 Breathe slowly · 3 Choose what to do next If your child puts Choose first, ask what would happen if they decided before calming down. The pause comes first so the choice is made with a clearer head.

3. A walk outside earlier in the day If your child picks the screen, ask what a bright screen might do to the body getting ready for sleep. Moving the body earlier in the day is the healthy choice here.

B

1. 5 (very easy) If your child picks 1, ask whether sketching feels hard for Ruby. The scale goes from 1, very hard, up to 5, very easy, so a calm activity she enjoys is a 5.

C

1. Give If your child picks Connect, ask whether Layla is spending time with someone or doing something kind for others. Giving away books to help others is Give.

2. Connect If your child picks Give, ask who the call is for. A regular chat that keeps two people close is Connect.

3. Be Active If your child picks Take Notice, ask whether Hana is paying attention to the world or moving her body. Running is Be Active.

4. Keep Learning If your child picks Be Active, ask whether the story is about moving the body or about learning something new. Here the new skill is the point, so it is Keep Learning.

D

1. Look for: Says each person can choose their own actions for the Five Ways, so a plan should suit the person and does not need a fixed order. If your child says Ola is right because the research is science, explain that the science shows the ways help, not that everyone must do them the same way. Ask which Way would fit them best.

E

1. Look for: A specific, realistic action that names a time, place, activity or amount, such as a walk after school or ten minutes of sketching on Tuesday.

Words to use

Say“Which of the Five Ways feels easiest for you, and which feels hardest? What would make the hardest one a little easier?”
Instead of“Just do all five every day, the same way everyone else does.”

After the sheet

Write the Five Ways on a sheet of paper. Put a coin on the Way that feels easiest and another on the hardest. Talk about why, then write one small action for the hardest Way and tape the paper somewhere you will see it.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

5 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Building resilience(with a plan)
  2. Peer Pressure and Your Brain(with a plan)
  3. Where money comes from(with a plan)
  4. How money grows and shrinks(with a plan)
  5. Planning with a budget(with a plan)
