Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. On a flat, clear floor If your child picks the window or the slope, ask what could happen if they slip or bump into something. Then ask them to pick the flat, clear floor.

2. Freeze where you are If your child keeps running, practise a stop signal at home. Clap once, and ask your child to freeze at once.

3. On both feet, bent knees If your child picks straight legs, ask them to land softly. Bent knees help the body absorb the landing.

B

1. Her hips If your child circles the hands, ask which part of the body stays low and turns the whole body. Point to the hips.

2. The balls of her feet If your child circles the heels, try a turn on the heels together. Then try one on the balls of the feet. Ask which turn felt quicker.

C

1. Turn fast round a cone → Twist your hips; Be ready to move off → Stay on the balls of your feet; Look where you are going → Keep your head up If your child joins the turn to the head, ask where the hips move when a body turns. Then match the head to looking ahead.

2. 1 Stand on the start line on the balls of your feet · 2 Run to the first cone and twist your hips · 3 Go round it and run to the next cone · 4 Run to the finish and stop with control If your child puts the finish first, ask them to read the steps aloud from the start line. A run always starts before it ends.

3. Look for: three bars shaded or labelled with the times of three timed zigzag runs If your child shades only one bar, ask them to run two more times and fill the other bars. Compare them to see which try was quickest.

4. Look for: one change to the run, such as twisting the hips, staying on the balls of the feet, or looking ahead

D

1. Look for: Kit is wrong: speed in a straight line does not always win, because turning and changing direction well can beat a faster runner If your child says Kit is right, they think speed always wins. Ask whether a quick turner could get past a faster runner in a zigzag.

E

1. Look for: A zigzag of four cones and one turn that twists the hips or uses the balls of the feet

Words to use

Say“Which part of you helped you turn quickly, and how did it feel?”
Instead of“Just run faster, that is all you need to win.”
