For the grown-up

Dodging Into Space · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Warm up your child may have picked the first step again. Ask what the room needs before anyone moves. Then ask what the body needs before the game.

2. So you do not trip on things

3. Watching the player

B

1. Lean to one side

C

1. Bend your knee → So your weight is low and ready to move; Keep your head up → So you can see the open space; Plant your foot → So you are steady before you lean; Be ready to dodge again → So you can try again if blocked

2. 1 Bend your knee · 2 Plant one foot firmly · 3 Lean to one side · 4 Shoot off the other way

3. He cannot see the open space your child may think speed is the problem. Looking down is the fault, because the open space cannot be seen. Ask what Kit could see if his head was up.

4. Look for: three marks, one for each try, each a tick or a cross

D

1. Look for: a defender can guess the dodge, so one dodge is not always enough your child may only say that Kit is wrong without a reason. Ask: what can the defender do if they guess the move? Then ask what the dodger should do next.

E

1. Look for: Two different dodges, such as lean left then dart right, or two quick dodges in a row, each with a reason.

Words to use

Say“Show me where you looked just before you dodged. Where could you see the space?”
Instead of“Just run faster next time.”

After the sheet

Play Shadow Dodge in a clear room or garden. Take turns being the defender and walk slowly. Cheer each dodge that gets through, with a grown-up watching.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
