Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Stormy If your child picks Sunny, ask: does a sad face look bright or dark? Then point to the stormy end of the scale.

2. Sunny If your child picks Stormy, ask what Ali did for his friend. Helping usually leaves people feeling bright and calm.

3. Stormy If your child picks Sunny, ask: is a wobbly tummy a calm feeling or a worried one? Point to the stormy end.

B

1. Sunny If your child picks Stormy, ask how Mia feels after telling the truth. Being honest often leaves a calm, sunny feeling.

2. Kindness If your child picks Courage, ask whether Zara was brave or caring. Sharing to help someone else is kindness.

C

1. Kindness If your child picks Honesty, ask what Priya did for Noah. Helping someone who has none is kindness.

2. Honesty If your child picks Kindness or Courage, ask what Priya's answer was about. Saying what is really true is honesty.

3. Fairness If your child picks Kindness, ask whether the choice was about taking turns equally. Equal turns show fairness.

4. Courage If your child picks Honesty, ask what made the choice hard. Doing something scary because it is right is courage.

D

1. Look for: A reason saying strengths are built by small choices and can grow, not only born. If your child says only that Kit is nice or mean, ask what Kit could do each day to be kinder. Strengths grow from choices.

E

1. Look for: Names one strength, such as kindness, honesty, fairness or courage, with a small choice made at home.

Words to use

Say“Which strength did that choice show? What small thing could you do again tomorrow?”
Instead of“You are just a kind person, or you are not. There is nothing to practise.”

After the sheet

Make a Values Star on paper with four points: Kindness, Honesty, Fairness, Courage. Together, write one real thing your child did for each point. If you need help, Childline is 0800 1111 and the NSPCC helpline for grown-ups is 0808 800 5000.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
