Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Shouting If your child picks Sharing or Helping, ask how that makes a friend feel. Then ask how shouting feels.

2. Listen If your child picks Interrupt, ask what a good listener does before they answer. They wait and hear the whole thing.

3. sad If your child picks happy, ask what happened to the friend. A friend moving away usually makes us sad.

B

1. Just see: The lollipop lady, The postman · Know well: Best friend Ali, Uncle Tom · Very close: Dad, Nan If your child puts the postman in Know well, ask whether they would share a worry with him. Someone we just see goes in the outer ring.

C

1. Gran If your child picks the shopkeeper, ask whether Mia knows the shopkeeper well enough to share a worry. Trusted people come first.

2. Just see: The shopkeeper · Know well: Best friend Ruby · Very close: Gran If your child puts Gran in Just see, ask how often Gran helps with worries. A very close person belongs in the middle ring.

3. Just see: Mrs Ward next door, The shopkeeper · Know well: Best friend Ruby, Auntie Pat · Very close: Mum, Gran If your child puts Mrs Ward in Know well, ask what Mia does when she sees her. A wave means just see.

4. Look for: Dad, in the very close ring, with a reason such as Priya tells him her worries. If your child picks the postman, ask if Priya would share a worry with him. Point to the middle ring.

D

1. Look for: People are not all the same; only trusted people, like a close grown-up, should get private worries. If your child says Lou is right, ask: would you tell the postman your worry? Then point to the rings and the people in each one.

E

1. Look for: Three named people placed in rings, each with a sensible reason about how close Jay feels to them.

Words to use

Say“Who is in your very close ring, and who would you tell first if something worried you?”
Instead of“Just say: don't talk to people you don't know, and move on.”

After the sheet

Draw three rings on a sheet of paper, with a dot for you in the middle. Put your people in the rings and talk about each one. Remind your child they will never be in trouble for telling a trusted grown-up. If a worry feels big, Childline is 0800 1111 for children, and the NSPCC helpline is 0808 800 5000 for grown-ups.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
