For the grown-up

Hidden Stories in Wrapping · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. green If they picked red, blue or yellow, ask which two colours mix to make green. Green is a secondary colour.

2. cube

3. orange If they said purple, they may be thinking of red and blue. Ask which two colours they would mix to make orange.

B

1. yellow If they chose grey or black, ask what colour sunflowers are. Colour can carry a memory without any words.

2. white

C

1. cylinder

2. cone If they said cylinder, they may be looking at a tube. A cone narrows to a point at the top.

3. sphere

4. cuboid If they said sphere, ask whether it has flat faces. A cuboid has flat faces and sits still.

D

1. Look for: Says no and gives a reason: a sculpture can be still or bulky and still tell a story, without looking real or moving. If they agree with Kit, ask whether a still wrapped tube could hold a memory. Then ask what story their own sculpture might hide.

E

1. Look for: A named material and colour, with a reason linked to a memory, place or feeling.

Words to use

Say“What is one thing that matters to you? Which colour would remind you of it?”
Instead of“Your sculpture has to look like something real, so draw a person first.”

After the sheet

Wrap a cardboard tube in scraps of wool or string. Choose a colour that reminds you of a place you know, then tell your grown-up the story.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
