'I am kind' is a label. It sounds fixed.

'I showed kindness when I held the gate for Priya.' names a real action.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. disappointed If your child circles 'excited', ask: how would Ali feel straight after losing? Point to the scale and talk about where that feeling sits.

2. Helps a friend feel sunny: Shares a pencil, Says thank you · Makes a friend feel stormy: Laughs at someone's mistake, Pushes in the line If a card is in the wrong column, ask your child how the other person would feel afterwards, then move the card together.

3. Honesty If your child circles Kindness or Fairness, ask: did Zara hide the cup or tell the truth? Which value is about telling the truth?

B

1. Look for: A sentence that names a real brave action the child took, not a label like 'I am brave'. If your child writes 'I am brave' again, say: that is a label. Ask what they did, then help them write it as an action.

2. Look for: A sentence that names a fair action from the child's recent life, not a label like 'I am fair'.

C

1. I asked three questions in science today. If your child circles 'I am curious', ask: what did you do today that showed curiosity? Turn that into the sentence.

2. I helped my brother find his shoe on Monday.

3. I can now swim a length, which I could not do last year.

4. I shared my apple with Zara at break, though I was hungry.

D

1. Look for: Says that kindness is something you do, so you keep practising and can get better, and a label does not stop change. If your child says 'Kit is right', ask: when might a kind person still need to practise, for example when they are tired or upset?

E

1. Look for: A sentence with 'used to' or 'before' and 'now' that describes a real change in what the child can do or feels.

Words to use

Say“Tell me what you did, not just what you are. Show me a time you were brave or fair.”
Instead of“You are so kind, you are always good.”

After the sheet

Make an 'I showed' jar: fold scraps of paper, write one kind or brave thing you did each day, and read them together on Friday. (If your child wants to talk about something worrying, Childline is 0800 1111 and the NSPCC helpline for grown-ups is 0808 800 5000.)

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
