Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. stormy your child picked the calm end. Ask where a very upset feeling would sit, then point to the storm end of the scale.

2. Look for: Says to check the picture in another trusted place, or to ask a trusted grown-up before sharing it. If your child writes share it, explain that sharing before checking can spread a fake picture. Ask what could be checked first.

3. Frustrated → I want something to change; Lonely → I need company; Proud → I did something well If the lines are crossed, ask your child what the feeling is asking for. Every feeling carries a message about a need.

B

1. yes If your child circles no, ask what time Nia goes to bed and what the video is doing at that time.

C

1. no If your child circles yes, ask whether the video is still playing when Maya's bedtime comes.

2. yes If your child circles no, ask what Maya is doing at 8 o'clock. If she should be asleep, the video is taking that time.

3. movement If your child picks sleep, ask what time it is. Then ask what Sam would have been doing if he went to practice.

4. time with people If your child picks nothing important, ask who Ruby is missing out on being with at dinner.

D

1. Look for: Says the minutes alone do not decide it. What matters is whether screens stop sleep, moving or family time. If your child agrees with Kit, ask: does an hour of screens after school stop Kit sleeping, moving or seeing family? Then ask whether the rule should be about minutes or about what screens replace.

E

1. Look for: An if-then rule that starts with If, names a time or place, and gives one small action linked to a real screen habit.

Words to use

Say“Which of your screen habits pushes something out? Which small rule would protect that one thing?”
Instead of“Screens are bad for you, so use them less.”

After the sheet

Ask them to list what they watched or played yesterday on the back of an envelope. Then they tick each one that came before bed, took the place of moving, or took the place of time with someone. Write one if-then rule for the first ticked thing. Nothing needs to be shared with anyone outside the family.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
