Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. stormy If your child picks cloudy, ask: is that a quiet, low feeling or a big, strong one? Strong feelings often need a calm step first.

2. Can make me feel worse: Staying up on a screen all night, Skipping meals all day · Helps my body and mood: A regular bedtime, Going out for a walk If your child puts a regular bedtime in the worse column, ask what sleep does for the body and mind. Sleep helps us feel calm and ready.

3. Take three slow breaths If your child picks shouting, ask what the feeling is asking for. A slow breath cools the body down so the next choice is easier.

B

1. Give If your child circles Connect, ask: did Mo make a new friend or talk for a long time? He did something kind for someone else, which is Give.

C

1. Be Active If your child circles Take Notice, ask: is Ben paying attention to his body moving, or to the sky? Here the body is moving.

2. Connect If your child circles Give, ask: did Ben do something for his nan without getting anything back? He spent time with her, which is Connect.

3. Take Notice If your child circles Keep Learning, ask: is Ben learning a new skill, or just noticing what is around him right now? Noticing is Take Notice.

4. Give If your child circles Connect, ask: did Ben spend time with the neighbour? He left the card without staying, so he gave something kind.

D

1. Look for: Says Jay is wrong because many of the Five Ways are free, such as talking, walking, helping or noticing, so money is not needed. If your child agrees with Jay, ask which of the five needs money. Most of them need only time, care and other people.

E

1. Look for: Names one of the Five Ways, gives a reason, and writes a commitment with one specific action and a day, such as a walk on Tuesday. If your child writes something vague, like be nicer, ask: what exactly will you do, and on which day? A clear plan is easier to check.

Words to use

Say“Which Way is that action? Which one would you like to grow this week, and what day will you try it?”
Instead of“Tell them they should be happier or try harder at being well.”

After the sheet

Set out five cups or bowls on the kitchen table, each with a name for one of the Ways written on a scrap of paper. Each day your child puts a dried bean in the cup for any Way they practised, then talks about it together. For a child or grown-up who wants to talk, Childline is 0800 1111 and the NSPCC helpline is 0808 800 5000.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

5 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Bouncing back, step by step(with a plan)
  2. Income, wealth and saving(with a plan)
