For the grown-up

Reading the Scenario · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. hands soft and wide your child picked stiff hands. Stiff hands bounce the ball away. Ask them to make a soft shape, like a cup, before the ball arrives.

2. head up

3. Look up first

B

1. shoot your child chose pass backwards. The goal is open, so a pass back throws the chance away. Ask: where is the goal, and who is near you?

C

1. 1 Look up and read the space · 2 Decide: pass, dribble or run · 3 Make the move · 4 Watch where the ball goes next

2. Dribble → Keep the ball close and head up; Pass → Use the inside of the foot to a teammate; Shoot → Strike low and through the ball; Run into space → Move early into a gap

3. run into the space your child chose stand still. Standing still lets the chance pass. Ask: where is the space, and can you reach it before the defender?

4. Look for: A move written for each of the three tries, and each move fits the scenario the grown-up called out.

D

1. Look for: Says Kit should read the scenario first, then choose the move that fits it, such as passing to a free teammate when a defender is close. your child may repeat that winning is all that matters. Ask: if a defender is close and a teammate is free, which move fits?

E

1. Look for: Two scenarios, each with a skill that fits the situation and a reason that links to the space, defenders or a teammate.

Words to use

Say“What is the scenario? Which move fits it best, and why?”
Instead of“Just shoot harder or run faster next time.”

After the sheet

In a clear space, set three cones in a triangle with a soft ball. Call out a scenario, such as defender in front or teammate free left. Your child chooses the move and says why, then swap roles. Keep the space clear, stay away from windows, and watch together.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
