Vaulting with control · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. warm up If your child picks cool down, ask which part comes at the end. Point to the chain and say the warm up goes at the start to get the body ready.

2. a clear space away from windows If your child picks the glass door, ask what could happen if they slipped. Then talk through the clear-space checklist together.

3. 1 Warm up the body · 2 Practise the skill · 3 Cool down slowly If your child puts cool down first, ask what the body needs before hard work. Warm up comes first so muscles are ready.

B

1. right foot If your child circles left foot, they have put the same side together. Ask them to say opposite hand and opposite foot out loud.

2. left foot If your child circles right foot, remind them the right foot steps over last, so a different foot must come up first. That is the left foot.

C

1. Look for: A bar coloured for each try that used the opposite hand and foot, and blank bars for the rest. Zero to three coloured bars are all fine.

2. 1 Place your right hand on the box · 2 Bring your left foot up onto it · 3 Lift your right foot and step over · 4 Land softly on the far side If your child puts landing first, say the vault has to get over the box before landing. Start with the hand going down.

3. Put the opposite hand and foot on the box If your child picks hold your breath, explain that breathing helps control. The fix for the pattern is the opposite hand and foot.

4. Step vault → Opposite hand and foot go on the box; Lazy vault → Use one hand at a time while the legs swing; Resilience → Try again slowly after a wobble If your child joins lazy vault to the opposite hand and foot, say the step vault uses that pattern. The lazy vault uses one hand at a time.

D

1. No, the foot should be opposite If your child circles yes, they think the same side goes together. Ask them to put a right hand down, then say which foot must lift in a step vault.

E

1. Look for: Says slow correct tries teach the right hand and foot pattern, and speed comes once it is steady.

Words to use

Say“Show me which hand goes down first. Which foot comes up?”
Instead of“Just go faster, you will get it.”

After the sheet

Roll up a towel and put it on the carpet. Ask your child to do five slow step vaults, then swap sides. Watch the whole time and count the correct tries together.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
