Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. full stop If they circle question mark, they may think it is asking something. Ask: does this sentence ask a question? No, so it ends with a full stop.

2. ship If they circle sock, they may hear only the s. Say the sounds slowly: sh, i, p. Then s, o, ck.

3. Ali lives here. If they circle the first sentence, ask them to point to the very first letter of each one. Which one is a capital?

B

1. happy If they circle cross, they may be reading one moment, not the ending. Ask: was Leo smiling at the end?

2. in a park If they circle under the sea, they may be guessing. Ask: where did Leo run after school?

C

1. Plot: Mia builds a sandcastle, Then the tide comes in · Setting: a sunny beach, a windy hill · Character: Mia, Dad If Mia is put under Setting, they may think names are places. Ask: is this a person or a place?

2. Nia If they circle rain, they may be picking out what the weather does. Ask: who is doing the laughing?

3. Lila, the baker → bakery; Sam, the teacher → school; Omar, the farmer → farm If they join a person to the wrong place, ask what that person does all day, and where they do it.

4. 1 Mia runs down to the sea · 2 Mia gets wet in the waves · 3 Mia laughs and shouts If they put the laughing first, they may be reading the last line first. Ask: what has to happen before Mia can get wet?

D

1. where and when the story happens If they circle what happens in the story, they have mixed setting up with plot. Ask: is the setting where, or what happens?

E

1. Look for: Three sentences: one names a character, one says where and when, one says what happens next.

Words to use

Say“Who is it about? Where and when is it? What happens?”
Instead of“Just tell me the ending.”
