For the grown-up

Writing numerals 0 to 5 · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 4

2. 5

3. 3

B

1. Look for: A numeral 3 made of two curves, starting near the top, with no lift of the pencil. If your child lifts the pencil in the middle, ask them to trace the 3 with a finger and not stop until the bottom.

2. 1 If your child circles 4, count its straight lines together. For a curvy numeral, trace the curve.

C

1. Lift the pencil: 4, 5 · One smooth movement: 0, 1, 2, 3

2. 1 Start at the top · 2 Go round to the left · 3 Go down and round the bottom · 4 Up the right side and back to the top If your child puts the bottom first, ask them where the pencil starts and trace the oval from there.

3. 0, 2, 3, 5 If your child circles 1 or 4, trace it together. Do its lines bend?

4. Look for: A numeral 4 with a slanted stroke, a line across, a lift of the pencil, then a separate straight line down.

D

1. Look for: Says no, and that 4 needs the pencil lifted once to start a separate straight stroke. If your child says yes, ask them to trace a 4 slowly with a finger and notice where it has to stop.

E

1. Look for: Says the 1 is one straight line, while the 4 has separate strokes that need a new start.

Words to use

Say“Show me where your pencil starts. Now trace it again without stopping.”
Instead of“Stop rushing and copy it again, it's messy.”

After the sheet

Trace each numeral from 0 to 5 in a tray of salt or rice, saying each stroke out loud, then write it on paper.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
