Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. The sheep ran off. If they pick the one with no full stop or a small letter at the start, ask: where does a sentence start, and where does it stop?

2. c If they circle e, they may be skipping a letter. Ask: what letter comes straight after b?

3. Sam

B

1. hat If they pick dog, they may think rhyming words start the same. Ask them to say the end sound of cat and of dog.

2. big

C

1. wall If they pick bag, they matched the first letter b. Ask them to say the last sound of ball and of bag.

2. tree If they pick bed or bean, they matched the first letter. Ask them to say the end sound of bee and of bean.

3. ramp

4. top, mop

D

1. Look for: Says no, because dog and deep end with different sounds; rhyme is about the end sound, not the first letter. If they say yes, they are listening to the first letter. Ask them to say only the last sound of each word.

E

1. Look for: A second line whose last word rhymes with hat (cat, mat, sat, bat and so on), plus a reason about the end sound.

Words to use

Say“Say both words out loud. What sound is at the very end of each one?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer, or say it is right when it is not.”

After the sheet

Sing a nursery rhyme you both know. Sing two lines worried and two lines happy, then swap who is the performer and who is the audience.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
