Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. flew 'Kite' is a naming word, so it is a noun. 'Flew' says what the kite did, so it is the verb. Ask: which word tells you an action?

2. glad 'Sad' is the opposite of happy, not a synonym. Ask your child which word sits nearest to happy on the sunny end of the scale.

3. lamp 'Bright' describes the lamp, so it is an adjective. A noun names a thing, so the lamp is the noun. Point to the thing being named.

B

1. adjective

2. verb Mia is telling us what she did to the spoon, so it is a doing word. Ask your child: is the word describing a thing, or saying an action?

C

1. submerged 'Submerge' is a doing word, and a boat cannot do that here. Ask your child: which word describes the boat?

2. submerge 'Will' tells us Ali has not done it yet. After 'will', use the base form, so the doing word is submerge.

3. submerged 'Submerge' is the present form. 'Last week' tells us it happened in the past, so the verb is submerged.

4. submerged 'Submerge' cannot describe the cup here. Ask your child: is the word describing the cup, so it is an adjective?

D

1. submerge If the child picks submerged, they think it is the verb after will. Say: after 'will', use the base word without -d, which is submerge.

E

1. Look for: Two sentences: one where submerged describes a noun (an adjective), and one where submerge or submerged is a doing word, plus a reason for each choice.

Words to use

Say“Does the word describe a thing, or does it say what someone does? Show me how you know.”
Instead of“That's wrong, just pick the other one.”

After the sheet

Fill a jar halfway with water and ask your child to drop in a coin. They say one sentence about the coin using submerged. Ask whether the word describes the coin or what they did.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
