For the grown-up

Whole pounds and the £ sign · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 36

2. 70

3. < If your child picks the wrong sign, check the digits from the left. The hundreds match, so compare the tens: 0 is less than 8.

B

1. £5

C

1. £1 If your child writes 100, that is the total in pence, not pounds. Ask how many pence make one pound.

2. £2 If your child writes 200, that is the total in pence. Two hundred pence is two pounds, so write £2.

3. £3

4. £5

D

1. £5 The £ sign always goes in front of the number, like a price tag. Point to the first symbol and ask your child which one leads.

E

1. Look for: 70 coins, and writes £7 with the £ sign in front.

Words to use

Say“Which symbol goes first, the £ or the number? Show me how you know.”
Instead of“Just write it like this, it is obvious.”

After the sheet

Put four £1 coins or four piles of buttons on the table. Write the amount two ways, £4 and £4.00, and say “four pounds” each time.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
