Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 12

2. 24 If your child writes 10, that is 4 + 6. Ask: is this 4 groups of 6, or 4 added to 6?

3. 10

B

1. 9 If your child writes 27, that is the total dots, not the number of groups of 3. Count the groups of 3 in each row.

C

1. 3 If your child writes 9, that is the dots, not the groups of 3. Split the row into threes and count the threes.

2. 6 If your child writes 18, that is 2 × 9, the total. Split each row of 9 into threes and count all the threes.

3. 12 If your child writes 36, that is the total. Count the threes in the four rows instead.

4. 15 If your child writes 45, that is the total. Each row of 9 holds three groups of 3.

D

1. no If your child says yes, count the 9s: 9, 18, 27. Six is not on that list. Six is in the 3s and the 6s, not the 9s.

E

1. 9, 18, 27, 36. Each one is in the 3 times table, because every 9 is three groups of 3. If your child includes numbers that only appear in the 3s, count on in 9s from 9 and check each one.

Words to use

Say“How many groups of 3 fit inside this group of 9?”
Instead of“Just learn the 9s by heart and skip the reasons.”

After the sheet

Lay out 9 coins in three rows of three. Then make 18 and 27 and count the rows of three each time.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
