Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 34

2. 68 If your child writes 59, they have added 1 instead of 10. Ask how many tens are in 58.

3. <

B

1. 59 If your child writes a number that is not the total, ask them to add the ones first, then the tens.

C

1. 55

2. 64 If your child lines the numbers up wrongly, check that the tens sit under the tens and the ones under the ones.

3. 64

4. 74

D

1. 77 If your child copies the bottom number, ask which number sits inside the equals sign. The sum goes there, and it is the total of both addends.

E

1. Look for: Both show the same two addends, so the sum stays the same whichever way round they are written.

Words to use

Say“Point to the equals sign first. What is above it, and what is inside it?”
Instead of“Just add the numbers and write the answer wherever there is space.”

After the sheet

Write two numbers one above the other on scrap paper, with tens under tens. Add them, then point to each addend and to the sum.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
