The short hand is just past 7 and the long hand is on 3. That is 15 minutes past 7.

It is in the morning, so it is 7:15 a.m.

On a 24-hour clock, 7:15 a.m. gets a 0 in front: 07:15. At 7:15 p.m., add 12 to the hour: 19:15.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 4:25

2. 20

3. 24

B

1. 21:40

C

1. 15:15 If your child picks 03:15, they have kept the 12-hour number. For afternoon times, add 12 to the hour.

2. 23:45 If your child picks 11:45, they have not changed it for the night. Ask: is this before or after midday? Then add 12 to the hour.

3. 12:00 If your child picks 00:00, they have mixed up midday with midnight. Midday is 12:00, halfway through the day.

4. 00:00 If your child picks 12:00, they have kept midday. At night, 12 o’clock is midnight, the start of a new day.

D

1. 12:00 If your child circles 00:00, they have swapped midday and midnight. 00:00 is the start of the day, and midday is 12:00.

E

1. Look for: No, 00:45 is 12:45 a.m. because 00:00 is midnight, the start of the day, so it is not p.m. If your child writes 12:45 p.m., ask what happens just after midnight. Times before midday are a.m., even when they look like 12.

Words to use

Say“Find the hour first, then ask: is this before or after midday?”
Instead of“Just say ‘it’s nine o’clock’ and skip whether it is morning or night.”

After the sheet

Look at the microwave or oven clock. Say the time two ways, 12-hour with a.m. or p.m. and 24-hour, then check which is which.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
